Dancing Through Life: Lessons from Salsa & Sales

And that’s the beauty of freelance sales, too. It’s a dance. You take the lead when needed, prospecting, pitching, negotiating, but you also need to know when to step back and let your clients lead. Let them tell you what they want. Let them guide the vision. Then, like salsa, you sync your steps, your timing, your energy.

Last night, the air was electric at my salsa class, the kind of vibe that makes you forget the world outside. The music pulsed, hips swayed, and bodies glided across the floor like liquid fire. We were partner-switching like speed dating on steroids, a few minutes here, a few minutes there,  connection after connection.

Then came Andreas (we’ll call him that ). Taller than me, not bulky but built like a dancer, with the gentlest smile that said, “I’ve got you.” We moved through the steps – him guiding, me following – and I could feel the rhythm deepen. Now, remember, I’ve been a dancer for over 17 years; this is what I do. My natural instinct is to lead, to anticipate, to take charge of the steps.

And then, in the middle of a turn, he looked at me and said the words that landed like a lightning bolt:

“Mel, you have to let me lead.”

That one line hit me harder than any spin or dip. It was a mirror to my whole life.
I’ve always led. Always stepped up. Always filled the void, filled the gaps. I’ve been the mum and the dad, the sister and the friend, the backbone and the bridge. Where others fell short, I stood tall. Where others hesitated, I leapt.

But in that moment, on that dance floor, something shifted. I realised there are men out there who are noble, strong, and capable of leading with grace, without dominance, without ego, but with conviction. And it reminded me of something even bigger:

In life, in love, in business, sometimes you need to let someone else lead.

That’s when magic happens.

This isn’t just about salsa. It’s about life. It’s about trust. It’s about recognising that while we can be everything to everyone, sometimes the true power is in letting go.

And as for Andreas? He didn’t just teach me a new move. He reminded me of an old truth:

Sometimes, the strongest thing a woman can do is not lead, but to trust the right partner to hold the rhythm while she shines.

Here’s to dancing through life with fire, grace, and a little bit of surrender.
